James W. Kimball,
ethnomusicologist on the faculty of the State University
College at Geneseo, New York, has long studied and been
fascinated by the social dance music of Western New York
State. From his extensive collection of manuscripts and
interviews with traditional dance musicians, he has
compiled a collection of dance music typical to rural New
York during the nineteenth and well into the
twentieth century.
The tunebook includes the melodies heard on the Sackett's
Harbor recording, most from unpublished manuscripts
of early fiddlers, a few from obscure early publications.
Chord symbols have been added, based on 19th-century
performance style. The book also featueres an eight-page
introduction, notes on the tunes, facsimile pages from
19th-century manuscripts, and comparitive musical
examples from other published sources.
