This traditional music
in this collection has been selected by Mitzie Collins to
appeal to young people from pre-school age through
elementary school. It is the kind of music she performs
widely in schools throughout the Rochester, New York,
area and which was frequently heard on the Rochester
Public Radio children's show of the same name, which was
produced by Mitzie and hosted by her and Tom Bohrer for
nearly ten years. (The theme song she wrote for the show
starts off the collection; the rest of the material in
the book is from various traditional sources.
In addition to the melody and chords for the tunes
and words to the songs the book includes
suggestions for song-related activities developed and
tested by Mitzie in her school appearances. She has
included adaptations for use with special children,
developed during her years of enjoying music with young
people at Rochester's United Cerebral Palsy pre-school
program. The book also includes Orff arrangements for
three of the selections, as heard on the recording, a
bibliography, and a pattern for constructing a simple but
effective limberjack dancing-man.
